Pool Maintenance Service

LUXOR Pool provides Pool Maintenance Service in Dallas, Texas and surrounding areas and uses an advanced technology platform to perform water chemistry analysis, online scheduling, invoicing, payments and weekly customer updates on pool care services performed.

Most pool maintenance companies are still using the same technology they used 10 -20 years ago.  However, technology changes rapidly and today’s pool customers are professionals who expect to be treated like professionals.  That is why we have invested in a technology platform that allows us to provide a higher level of customer service to our clients.

Why You Should Use
A Pool Maintenance Service

In Dallas and surrounding areas, there is nothing that can make your home more enjoyable than having a swimming pool.  A swimming pool creates so many relaxing, fun and enjoyable moments for you and your family.  It is a great place to entertain and create memories for years to come.  That is exactly why having a professional Pool Maintenance Service is so important.

Many homeowners have an image in their mind of the stereotypical pool boy who cleans the leaves out of your pool.  As a result, they think to themselves “I could do that” and probably save myself some money in the process.  However, there is much more involved in cleaning and maintaining a pool than simply cleaning out the leaves.  Trying to clean and maintain your own pool can be a very difficult and time-consuming task.

In addition, the many different factors that affect the water chemistry can cause your pool to quickly get out of control (especially in the heat and constantly changing weather conditions in the Dallas area).  Most people under-estimate the complexity of maintaining proper pool water chemistry.  That is why it is important to hire an expert who truly knows how to manage pool water chemistry.

LUXOR Pools - Pool Cleaning Service

How To Choose Your
Pool Maintenance Service

There are many Pool Maintenance Companies in the Dallas metroplex.  So how do you choose a Pool Maintenance Service with all these choices.  Here are a few guidelines to help you make a good decision:

LUXOR Pools - Pool Cleaning Service

Trust:  More than any other factor it is imperative that you use a Pool Maintenance Service you can trust.  These are people who will be in your backyard at random times during the week (often times when you are not at home). They may even be around your children and pets at times.  So, if these are not people you would invite over to a backyard barbecue then you probably shouldn’t have them cleaning and maintaining your pool.  So, spend a little time getting to know the people who own and manage the Pool Maintenance Service you select.

Professionalism:  Pool Servies are just like any other home contractor.  There are really good ones and there are really bad ones.  There are people who are going to be transparent and honest with you and there are people who are going to try to cut every corner to save time and make more money off of you.  As a result, it is critical that your Pool Maintenance Service conducts themselves with the utmost professionalism.  The way they look, dress, act and talk should convey professionalism.  They should communicate with you frequently – letting you know when they will be visiting your home, when they leave your home and specifically what they did while they were there.  Ideally, they would send you before and after photos in case you are not around to inspect their work.  They should let you know what type of water analysis was conducted and what chemicals were added to your pool.  Take a few minutes to look at their truck and see how they take care of their equipment and chemicals.  All of these things say something about the professionalism of the company you are dealing with.

Expertise:  Managing and growing a Pool Maintenance Service business is just like any other business.  Having employees and contractors who are well-trained and constantly increasing their knowledge is critical to the success of the business and the happiness of their customers.  So, you should ask questions of any prospective Pool Maintenance Service as to how they train and certify their employees.

Reliability:  One of the most important attributes of a good Pool Maintenance Service is reliability.  Do they do what they say they are going to do?  Do they show up when they say they are going to?  Are they on time?  Do they call or text when something changes with their schedule? Any time a contractor is going to be entering your home or backyard and potentially invading your privacy it is very important that you know what to expect.  This all starts with the initial meeting you have a Pool Maintenance Service.  You should note whether they show up on time and how they communicate with you if something changes.

Protection:  Your swimming pool is one of the most expensive assets you own.  Therefore, who you trust to care and maintain for this asset should not be a trivial decision.  It is entirely possible that a Pool Service could damage your pool and/or pool equipment if they do not make the right decisions regarding your pool maintenance.  Therefore, it is critical that you choose a company that is licensed, insured and trusted by other customers.  Don’t be hesitant to ask for a copy of their insurance or licenses.

LUXOR Pools - Pool Cleaning Service

Cost:  Determining a fair cost for a Pool Maintenance Service is not a simple process.  This is because every pool is unique and there are many factors involved in determining a cost which is fair to the homeowner but still profitable for the Pool Maintenance Service.  Here are some of the many factors that should be considered by any reputable Pool Maintenance Service:

    • Size of your pool
    • Depth of your pool
    • Number of surrounding trees
    • Age of pool equipment
    • Type of pool surface
    • Ease of access to pool
    • Frequency of pool use / number of swimmers
    • Any pets that get into the pool
    • Whether your pool has an auto-fill feature
    • Whether your pool uses a salt-chlorinator or other alternative sanitation mechanism
    • Frequency of pool cleaning service (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, one-time)

What Is A Fair Price
For A Pool Maintenance Service?

You can see from the list of cost factors above how difficult it would be for a Pool Maintenance Service to give you a price until they have physically visited your pool (or have all these questions answered).  As a result, you should be very leery of any Pool Service contractor that quotes a fixed price on their website or gives you a price over the phone without addressing all these issues.  There are several pricing strategies you will see used by different Pool Maintenance Services:

  • The “Low-Ball” Offer:  This is where a Pool Cleaner promotes a seemingly “great” price for pool cleaning (I.e. $49 Pool Cleaning).  If the price seems ridiculous… then the service will also probably be ridiculous.  What these Pool Cleaners are not telling you is what is NOT included in their service.  These offers are normally just for cleaning the leaves out of your pool (yet they don’t include things like brushing your pool, water analysis, chemicals or filter cleaning).  The truth is no Pool Maintenance Service can stay in business if they don’t charge a reasonable price for their service unless they also cut back on certain services.  Cutting corners like this eventually just results in problems maintaining your pool (especially in the warmer summer months).

  • The “Limited Frequency” Offer:  Some Pool Cleaners will offer discounted prices if they only clean your pool monthly or twice per month.  However, in a warm climate like Dallas and surrounding areas, there is no way this frequency of service will work (at least not while maintaining safe levels of chlorine in your pool).  Weekly cleanings is practically a requirement in the Dallas area.  Extremely hot temperatures, frequent weather changes, pollen and many other factors can turn your pool green in a matter of days if not maintained properly.  So, be sure and pay attention to the “frequency of service” associated with an offer.  Choosing a limited frequency arrangement will just create more problems for you.

  • Transparency:  The key to knowing that you are getting a fair price from a Pool Maintenance Service is transparency.  A reputable Pool Maintenance Service should be able to clearly explain why they charge certain prices for their service.  That is why we sit down and walk through our pricing guidelines with our prospective customers when we arrive at your home.

What Should Be Included
In A Pool Maintenance Service?

As we mentioned previously, the price you pay for a Pool Maintenance Service is largely dependent on what is actually included as part of the service.  As you talk to different Pool Services you will discover a wide variety of options that may or may not be included in their service.  To help you know what to ask prospective Pool Service, here is a fairly comprehensive list of options that could be included as part of their service:

  1. Cleaning out skimmer baskets
  2. Blowing off pool deck (to reduce amount of leaves and debris that end up in the pool)
  3. Skimming pool service to remove leaves, insects and debris
  4. Brushing pool steps and pool walls to remove any algae, dirt or chemical residue.
  5. Vacuuming pool bottom to remove any leaves, dirt and debris
  6. Checking built-in pool vacuum system for proper functioning
  7. Cleaning built-in pool vacuum net or container for leaves, dirt and debris.
  8. Cleaning pump basket (at pool equipment)
  9. Checking pressure on filter
  10. Back-washing filter (if necessary)
  11. Adding water to pool (if necessary)
  12. Cleaning filter (normally every 6 months for DE filters or more often depending on pool environment).  Note:  Be sure and ask if filter cleans are included in their normal price or priced separately.
  13. Testing water chemistry levels (see below for proper testing procedures for water chemistry)
  14. Adding appropriate chemicals based on test results.  Note:  Be sure and ask if chemicals are included as part of their standard pricing.  Also be sure and ask what happens when “extra” chemicals are needed for special situations (partial pool draining / refilling, special weather situations, extreme heat, etc.)

How To Judge The Quality Of
A Pool Maintenance Service?

It is fairly easy for Pool Services to “disguise” the actual quality of the service they are providing.  Because most homeowners don’t really know what to look for in a Pool Maintenance Service some Pool Companies will take advantage of this situation to reduce their costs and increase their profits.  Below is a list of “quality tests” you can use to judge the quality of service you are getting from your Pool Maintenance Service:

LUXOR Pools - Pool Cleaning Service
  • The “Trash” Test:  This is a test to see what your Pool Service does with the leaves, dirt and debris they remove from your pool, skimmers and filters.  The proper procedure is for them to place this “trash” in a bucket and actually remove it from your premises.  However, many Pool Services will actually just dump it in your grass, shrubs or some other location on your premises.  This is just a sign of laziness and carelessness.  In our opinion, this is reason enough to fire your Pool Maintenance Service.
LUXOR Pools - Pool Cleaning Service
  • The “Brush” Test:  This is test to see if they properly brush the steps and walls of your pool every time or just when they think it needs it.  The proper procedure is to brush your pool steps and pool walls every time.  This is simply because materials can begin to build up on these surfaces even though they may not be readily visible to the eye above the water.  This can quickly turn into discoloration of your pool, algae growth and other issues in a matter of days (often before the Pool Service returns for their next visit).  While skipping this step may save time and money for the Pool Service, it can also create problems with the clarity and cleanliness of your pool.
LUXOR Pools - Pool Cleaning Service
  • The “Vacuum” Test:  Having a built-in pool vacuum system that is not functioning properly is one of the quickest ways for your pool to get out of control.  Proper cleaning of the pool bottom and walls is essential to consistent pool health.  However, given that your built-in pool vacuum is technically a piece of equipment, many Pool Services consider this outside of the scope of their regular Pool Maintenance Service.  As a result, if you built-in pool vacuum system isn’t working properly they may just ignore this situation and clean your pool as best they can without addressing this.  At the very least, your Pool Maintenance Service should make you aware that your built-in pool vacuum system is not functioning properly.  However, the better Pool Cleaning Services will take proactive action to analyze the problem and come up with a solution.  Any quality Pool Maintenance Service should also carry with them a Pool Vacuum to remove any debris from the bottom of the pool.  The ideal solution would be to clean the bottom of your pool using their Pool Vacuum and making arrangements to have your in-pool vacuum repaired or replaced.
LUXOR Pools - Pool Cleaning Service
LUXOR Pools - Pool Cleaning Service

  • The “Test Strip” Test:  Testing your pool water chemistry is very much a science.  Analyzing the chemistry of your pool is actually much more complex than most people realize.  In fact, is much more complex than most Pool Services want to deal with on a regular basis.  As a result, it is common practice to take shortcuts in this area to decrease the amount of time that is spent on analyzing your pool water chemistry.  There are actually 10 chemical tests that should be performed each time your pool is serviced:
    1. Free Chlorine
    2. Total Chlorine
    3. pH
    4. Calcium Hardness
    5. Total Alkalinity
    6. Cyanuric Acid
    7. Phosphate
    8. Copper
    9. Iron
    10. Salt (for salt-water pools only)In addition there are 4 additional tests that could be performed depending on the type of pool you have including:
    11. Bromine
    12. Borate
    13. Biguanide
    14. Biguanide Shock

Although their are 10 – 14 tests that should be performed, the vast majority of Pool Services only test 4 – 6 of these chemicals each time they service your pool.  You will know they are doing this when they use “Test Strips” (which are small strips of paper with color indicators on them).  These test strips are typically only capable of measuring 4 – 6 of these chemicals.  Pool Services use these Test Strips because they are cheap, fast and save them time and money.  However, this also means that your Pool Service is making decisions about how to treat your pool with incomplete information about the total chemistry of your pool.

Pool Services will argue these Test Strips measure the 4 most important chemicals in your pool.  That is a true statement.  However, they are still missing important information on the other chemicals in your pool that could cause a new problem to surface.  These problems can go undetected until they become a major problem.

There is a reason why no public pools or commercial pools are analyzed using Test Strips.  That is because the health of these pools is too important to be left to just 4 indicators and someone judging the tint of colors with their naked eye.  The question you should ask yourself is “How important is the health of my pool water to my family, friends, children and pets?”.  If your answer is “Very important” then you should only select a Pool Maintenance Service that does a thorough job of testing your water chemistry every time they service your pool.

What Type Of Pool Maintenance Service Do You Want To Do Business With?

If you have taken the time to read this article then you should probably be asking yourself “What type of Pool Maintenance Service do I want to do business with?”.  Do you want to do business with a Pool Service that takes short cuts to save themselves time and money?  Or do you want to do business with a comprehensive Pool Maintenance Service who takes the health and wellness of your pool and your family seriously?  Do you want to do business with contractors who hide information from you because it’s not in their best interest?  Or do you want to do business with a professional company that is transparent in all their business dealings with you?

As you can see from this article, LUXOR Pool is a company that believes in total transparency and takes the health and wellness of your pool seriously.  We work hard and spend time and money in order to differentiate ourselves from most other Pool Services.  We believe there is a level of professionalism that is sorely missing in the Pool Service industry and we intend to change that.
